MODULE FOUR

Reflective Journal:

This week I have worked on a mid-term group project along with Ann, Deb, and Marcela. Each of us did a search on one of the assessment tools, and then it’s edited as one paper. It was nice to get an overview of other assessment tools which I haven’t worked on. I know it’s the purpose of the jigsaw exercise. I have never practiced jigsaw practice to my course. But it is definitely worth trying for a group project for my online course and see how it goes. I just wonder if the instructor should give students choices if they don’t like to work in groups.

I am very grateful that people in my group work together so respectfully and cooperatively. They are very knowledgeable and helpful as well. Ann even added a conclusion part for my research. I really appreciate that. Every one in the group is very considerate and posted early enough to leave time for the final review. I have enjoyed my experience to work in the group this week.

Assessment Tools for Online Learning- Mid-Term Group Project

The emergence of social networking and collaboration tools on the Internet has provided the opportunity for educators to incorporate authentic assessment tools into their online learning environments. There are many tools from which to choose, however learning outcomes and performance based objectives must be aligned with the appropriate assessment tools. The purpose of this paper is to showcase four assessment tools for online educators. The discussion of each tool will include an explanation of the tool, uses and benefits, potential weaknesses, and examples of how the tools can be used by educators.

Our assessment toolbox contains the following:
1. Quiz and Test Builder tools - SurveyMonkey
2. Reflection Assessment tools – LiveJournal
3. Peer-to-Peer Collaboration tools – Wikis
4. Course Tracking tools – MicroGrade

Please go to Assessment Toolbox to overview the four assessment tools.

Jinfang: I liked the design of your group project and your portion "Survey Monkey" was well done. I didn't know that you can only get 100 responses using Survey Monkey. That is useful information.

You mentioned some students might not like to work in groups. Another way to have them experience the Jigsaw concept is to assign different chapters of a textbook for reading. Each student writes on a different chapter and shares the information.

That might be one way to get them used to working in collaborative groups.
